Description:

Africa after Pigafetta. Richly embellished map. Published in Germany by Theodore de Bry. This map rejects the long-held Ptolemaic belief that the source of the Nile derives from the Mountains of the Moon. It also discards the theory of the lakes standing side by side. In this depiction one lies above the other; the lower lake feeds (Rio de Manhice) the Zambezi, and the (Lorenzo Marches) Limpopo, and the northern one feeds the Nile. The northern lake is also placed above the equator. [AFR4704] |
