Description:
Madeira and its capital Funchal were very important as a colony and transfer point for European commercial interests up to the eighteenth century. Madeira was re-discovered by Portuguese sailors in the service of Henry the navigator in 1419, and settled after 1420. It is considered to be the first territorial finding in the Portuguese Age of Discovery. Spain and Portugal squabbled for years over control of the island until the Treaty of Alcáçovas in 1479 when it was given to Portugal as well as the Azores and Cape Verde. In return Spain received full charge of the Canary Islands. [AFR4744]
