Early copper-engraved map of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Burma, Java, Sumatra, Timor, and Indochina. One of the earliest available modern maps of the region, i.e. no longer based on the classical geography of Claudius Ptolemy. Published in Ruscelli's 1574 edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia" as one of a handful of modern maps. Enlarged from a rare 1548 map by Giacomo Gastaldi which was based on Portuguese sources showing the most recent discoveries of Portuguese explorers.
