Handsome French map of central and eastern Panama and the north-west coastline of Colombia. The northern coast of the Caribbean from just west of Colón and Portobelo east to Cartagena and Santa Marta in Colombia. The southern coast starts at Punta Mala and Panama City and ends at Garachine in the Bay of San Miguel. .
The map features topographical information such as mountainous regions, rivers and lakes. It marks major settlements with a fort icon and has annotations of indigenous peoples. A note titled “Fortes de Portobelo” gives a key to the four forts in the northern port town. In Colombia, there is a remarks about a ‘navigable arm’ of the river that joins to the sea via lagoons.
At the time of this maps publishing (and since 1538), Panama was under the rule of Spain and the jurisdiction of the Viceroyalty of New Granada - a new position in northern South America to help oversee and deter other European countries from trying to take control of Spanish territory as there had been some successful raid attempts. In 1671, a privateer engaged by the English Government raided and razed the city of Panama to the ground - which at the time was deemed to be the second most important city of the Spanish New World. In 1697, the northern port of Portobelo was again compromised by English pirates (whose crew included a young William Dampier!).
Only nine years after this map was produced, the War of Jenkin’s Ear began (1739-48), a trade and expansion war between the British and Spanish Empires in the Caribbean.
