Detailed map of southeastern Afghanistan and Pakistan, illustrating the journey of Lieutenant James Sutherland Broadfoot (died 1840) from Ghanzi to Dera Ismail Khan on the River Indus.
This map would have originally accompanied a work titled “Reports on Parts of the Ghilzi Country, and on some of the Tribes in the Neighbourhood of Ghanzi; and on the route from Ghanzi to Dera Ismail Khan by the Ghwalari Pass” which was included in the ‘Supplementary Papers’ published by the Royal Geographical Society (1885). It was written by James Sutherland Broadfoot of the Bengal Engineers (1839) and edited by his brother - Scottish military man and author, Major William Broadfoot in 18. The report describes the route taken by his brother whilst in Afghanistan and crossing into what is now Pakistan, his encounters with the Ghilzais and other local tribes and his crossing of the Suleiman Mountain Range.
Both William and James appeared to have been employed as rather high ranking army officers in the East India Company during the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842) during The Great Game.
