Description:

The Pamir region between Afghanistan and Tajikistan showing the upper sources of the Amu Darya (or Oxus) River, one of the great rivers of Asia. The region is roughly sketched with large areas of 'unknown country' marked. Samarkand, the great Silk Road trading city, is located on the far left, while Chitral and the Hindu Kush range are along the bottom edge.
Published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society to illustrate an article by Veninkof, a Russian scholar. The map is derived and translated from an 1861 map published in the Journal of the Imperial Geographical Society of St. Petersburg, Russia.
