Description:
Fine map of the Moghul Empire based upon the celebrated map by Willem & Jan Blaeu. Map shows the caravanserai routes from the coast of Gujarat to Delhi, and north to Kabul, Afghanistan. The caravanserai shows resting points for travellers which are a day’s journey apart. Among the stops on this route (marked as small circles) are the cities of Agra, Delhi and Lahore.

The decorative cartouche shows two costumed figures, said to represent trade between the Europeans and the Moghuls. In the centre of the two figures, potent symbols of Moghul power; a sphere encasing nine smaller spheres each including the naming previous emperors. Inside this, the Imperial symbol of the Moghuls, a lion crouching in front of the sun. This iconography also features on the important Baffin-Roe Map by Samuel Purchas.

Elegant original hand colour. [IC2125]
