Description:

Beautifully engraved map of the island of Elba with illustrations of the fortresses of Ferrara and Longone now known as Portoferraio and Porto Azzurro respectively. This map was originally published in Coronelli's Isolario, or 'Book of Islands'.
The map is set above a block of text describing the history and geography of Elba. Within this text, and seemingly completely unrelated, is a portrait of Fredericus Gualdus. Gualdus, a mysterious figure, lived in Venice in the 1680s and was the author of a work titled "Revelation of the True Chemical Wisdom". A contemporary Dutch newspaper claimed he was over four hundred years old. Gualdus appears again in the early Freemason work, "Compass der Wiesen", which claims that he was still alive in 1782, which would have made him 600 years old!
