Early, copper-engraved county map of Sussex. The map uses the work of Christopher Saxton’s “Atlas of the counties of England and Wales” (published in 1579) which was the very first comprehensive mapping of the English counties. This map has been completed by cartographer John Norden, and engraved by William Kip for publishing in William Camden’s ‘Britannia’.
The map features a Royal Coat of Arms in the upper left of the map, with balancing decorative title cartouche with Italianate strapwork in the opposing corner of the map. A legend and listing of the hundreds, compass rose and scale all adorned in similarly decorative strapwork. A ship and a sea monster feature in the English Channel.
