Classical North Africa centring on the Kingdom of Carthage in the Punic period (264BC - 146BC). Authored by Ortelius himself and featuring in "Parergon".
The map shows the North African coastline from Tunisia's border with Algeria, east to Libya and including cities Tripoli (Tripolis) and the modern day site of Benghazi. The Mediterranean islands of Malta, Gozo and Lampedusa can be seen, along with the southern coast of Sicily.
The cartographic sources for this map are based on modern information taken from Giacomo Gastaldi’s map of Africa (1564) and Ortelius’s knowledge from ancient historian’s such as Didorus Siculus, Plinius, Appianus and Herodotus. A note in the reference text by van den Broecke states that the verso description “deals mostly with the city of Carthago [Carthage] and its final destruction by the Romans”.
