North America. Landmark map produced to accompany Father Hennepin's account of his travels in New France. Following Coronelli, this map shows the Mississippi flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. California is depicted as an island disconnected from the mainland at high tide, but attached at low tide, a fascinating compromise to the 'California as an island' debate. The elaborate title cartouche contains a dedication to William III, King of Great Britain. [AMER2259]
