Description:
Detailed map of the Caucasus covering the modern-day countries of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The map includes inset of plans of Georgian capital Tbilisi, and towns Anapa (Анапа, Russian) and Batumi (ბათუმი, Georgia), both on the coast of the Black Sea.

Joseph Grässl was the cartographer and engraver behind the map. Very little is known about Grässl but that he operated from Gotha, central Germany and for his partnership/work with Joseph Meyer.

Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) was a very successful German publisher and industrialist who founded the Bibliographisches Institut in Gotha in 1826, which two years later was moved to Hildberghausen. This map of the Caucasus would have originally been featured within the 1856 edition of Meyer’s Hand-Atlas.
