| This map of Hawaii was part of the account which recorded the progress of the United States Exploring Expedition, a landmark voyage of exploration and discovery in the Pacific Ocean. The expedition was led by Lieut. Charles Wilkes and covered an extraordinary distance between 1838-42. Major discoveries in the fledgling field of oceanography among many other fields have resulted in the citing of this expedition as one of the most important American scientific undertakings of the nineteenth century.
