De L'Isle's famous map of Senegal, published at a time of great French interest and expansion in Africa, attempts to accurately portray the region of Senegal. Curiously, the map is signed not by De L'Isle himself, but by his widow, Marie-Angelique Delisle. The title cartouche states that this posthumous work of Guillaume De L'Isle was published by Marie-Angelique in 1727, two years after her husband's death in 1725. A good map of this region was obviously so important to the French crown that Marie-Angelique decided to finish the map and publish it herself. She continued to operate her late husband's business until her own death in 1745, at which point her stock passed to her son-in-law, Philippe Buache.
