This map of Virginia was drawn by Thomas Kitchin for the London Magazine and was based on the Fry-Jefferson map of 1755. A couple of interesting notes on the map show the limits of European settlement in Virginia as of 1755 as well as the fact the the Ouasioto Mountains, also known as the Cumberland Mountains, were impassable at that point. The last could be disputed as a pass through these mountains was in common use by native Americans and had also been reported by various European explorers. However, the first individual to accurately explore and record this Pass was Daniel Boone in 1775 and ultimately it would become known as the Cumberland Gap and become one of the major gateways to Western expansion.
