The first English map of Australia. Bowen's famous map of Australia is based on Thevenot's Dutch map which is in turn based on the information brought back by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. On one of the text panels, Bowen is in fact very insistent that this is an exact copy of Tasman's map and information. He also speculates about the Eastern and Northern coastlines of the continent, suggesting that both New Guinea and New Zealand form part of the landmass. The other text panel praises the climate and location of Australia, claiming that it will certainly be a land as fertile and as wondrous as all the other exotic islands of the region, such as Java, Sumatra and the Moluccas.
