Beautifully rendered chart of the coasts of modern Vietnam and Southern China including Hainan. Of particular note is a large sandbank noting the location of the Paracel Islands. The map is credited to Captain John Haldane a tragic figure. Haldane was a member of a large Scottish family based in Gleneagles. He was mentioned in a remarkable set of Memoirs by William Hickey, in which he was portrayed as eternally unlucky. As well as losing his stake in one British East India Company ship, Haldane was then put in command of another, which upon arrival in Bombay, was completely destroyed in a fire. The governor of Bombay generously raised enough money to put Haldane in command of another ship, the Nancy, and upon her arrival on the shores of Britain, it was caugh in a storm off the Isles of Scilly, where she went down with all hands, including Haldane's partner, a famous actress named Mrs. Ann Cargill.
