British Columbia and Vancouver Island showing the new mainland border settled between Great Britain and the United States in 1846. Of note is the small caption on the lower left stating the two conflicting claims by the above nations to the San Juan Islands, off the southeastern coast of Vancouver Island. In 1859, this dispute led to a confrontation known as "The Pig War" and resulted on both countries stationing armed troops there. The dispute was not resolved until 1872, when a German border commission established by Kaiser Wilhelm I ruled in favour of the United States, much to the disgust of local Canadian inhabitants.
