Quebec, or 'Lower Canada'. Published to show the disputed border between Canada and Maine and the claims of the British and USA. The Aroostook War (1838-1839) was an international incident between the United States and Canada over the border of Maine. No fighting took place, though local militias were called up. The dispute was settled peacefully in 1842 when diplomats from both parties met in Washington and signed the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. The green boundary shows the American claim which extends much further into Canada than the modern-day border.
Quebec itself is carefully annotated to show the townships and land grants which had been established by the year 1840.
