Description:

Classic Dutch Golden Age rendering of the Chasepeake Bay and the regions of what was to become Virginia and Maryland. It is based on the survey by John Smith and shows the Bay on an east to west orientation. Henricus's map is almost exactly based on one which was initially produced by his brother, Jodocus Hondius Jr. who, although he copied Smith's map, also improved it and more importantly, disseminated it by way of the atlases produced by both his brother and the Blaeu family. This constant use of Smith’s survey prolonged its authority as a source and even more importantly, helped to solidify English claims to the Bay region. Original hand colour. [Burden 228] [USA8965] |
