Strong imprint of a RARE and magnificent early cordiform world map. The geographical correspondence, similarity in woodcutting style, and the same truncated cordiform projection derive from Waldseemuller's map of 1507. Other than the only known example of the Waldseemuller, now in the library of Congress, the Apian is the first available map with the name ‘America’. Note also the addition of Calicut to the coast of India; a hint at some of the recent Portuguese discoveries of the East.
Laurent Fries, whose initials appear in the lower right hand corner, was most likely the co-draughtsman or woodcutter: the twelve wind heads and the decorative surround to the map are robust examples of his skill. The other initials are those of Johann Kamers in whose book the map appeared.
