Rare early map of the West Indies added specifically to the English edition of Mercator's Atlas Minor produced by Michael Sparke.
This cartographic format for the West Indies did not appear in the early version of Mercator's Atlas, appearing first in the issue by Cloppenburgh in 1630 and 1632. Sparke re-engraved the plate to add an English title on the cartouche and added his name to the map on the lower centre.
Geographically, the map can ultimately be traced back to the map by Johannes de Laet, a noted cartographer and director of the Dutch West India Company.
