Rare chart of Gibraltar by the greatest Spanish hydrographer of the 18th century. It is unusual as it was published from the Spanish perspective. The dating of this map is of particular note for the Spanish as they had just failed to take Gibraltar during the Great Siege. In a peculiar footnote of history, the Great Siege of Gibraltar is historically perceived as being part of the American Revolutionary War, which officially came to an end in 1783. The Treaty of Versailles, which settled this conflict, ensured that the Spanish would cease to siege the peninsula in return for control of the island of Menorca and East and West Florida. SL
