Description:
Spectacular large map of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) with two grand cartouches. The first depicts the island's inhabitants as wealthy and well-dressed with sizeable military strength and notes their use of elephants and camels. The second shows four mythical beings representing the plants and waters of the island frolicking around the legend and scale, which is given in German, Spanish, and French miles.

Cities, forts, and roads are specifically marked on the island, while scattered passages of text in Dutch describe the foliage and production of certain regions.

The southwest corner of the island is highlighted in pink as the only region where cinnamon can grow. Cinnamon, being one of the most desirable spices in Europe, was of great interest to Dutch traders and colonists, making this information all the more valuable. The smaller region in green at the northern tip of the island shows where many elephants can be found.

Vibrant original hand-colour. [IC2616]
