|
Government survey map of St Lucia illustrating the topography of the island. The names of the 81 plantations under cultivation at the time are provided by an index on the left side of the page, and their locations are marked on the map.
The survey of the island was undertaken by Detaille & Jamet on the order of Lt. Col. William Reid, Governor-in-Chief of the Windward Islands. Amongst other achievements, Reid established the National Library of Bermuda and published several books about the formation of North Atlantic hurricanes. He was also governor of Bermuda and of Malta during a long military career.
