Description:

Fantastic early map of Yellowstone National Park by Philetus Norris, the second Superintendent of the park and the first to receive a salary. Hotel sites are marked with green stars and indexed in the lower margin. Areas of geyser or hot spring activity are shaded red.
This map was compiled from the official explorations of the park by the Superintendent himself, and was first published in 1881 to accompany Norris' 5th annual report to the Department of the Interior on the state of the park. As noted in the lower margin, this specific example was published to illustrate a report by Thomas Donaldson on the history and current state of Public Lands held by the US Government (1884).
