County map of Nottinghamshire with the roads, both completed and under construction, marked.
This map was first published in 1743-4 by Thomas Read who created a series of miniature county maps to illustrate his book, The English traveller. The maps were subsequently re-used in several other 18th century miniature atlases. From 1753-64, John Rocque, the celebrated Huguenot mapmaker, used these maps in his The Small British atlas. They then appeared once more in 1769 in Russell & Price's "England Displayed being a new, Complete and Accurate Survey and Description of the Kingdom of England and Principality of Wales". This example is from the latter work.
