Rare map of Hertfordshire decorated with two large cartouches, a compass, and a splendid coat of arms belonging to the dedicatee, Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex. John Seller intended this map to be included in a new grand atlas of county maps, the 'Atlas Anglicanus', but after surveying only six counties (Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, and Middlesex) the project was abandoned for lack of funds.
All six maps are wonderfully decorative and decently accurate for the period. They show England's growing road network (most likely derived from John Ogilby's road atlas 'Britannia' which was published a year earlier) and, almost uniquely for the period, they also show the general layout of the major towns. Gentlemen's houses, churches, and mills (both windmills and watermills) are also identified with their own symbols.
