The Lesser Antilles from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad, including all of the Windward and Leeward islands. The nationality of each island is indicated. The direction of the Trade Winds is also marked based on the research of the astronomer Sir Edmond Halley and the navigator William Dampier.
This map was published during the Seven Years' War, a global conflict between the British, the French, the Spanish, the Austrians, and the Prussians. The North American theatre of the war is better known as the French and Indian War. Many of the Lesser Antilles changed hands several times during the conflict, and the Treaty of Paris which ended the war ultimately decided the colonial status of many Caribbean islands.
Engraved by Thomas Kitchen for the London Magazine, England's first literary periodical (first published in 1732).
