Elegantly-engraved and fascinatingly detailed map of the United States in the year 1820 showing the progress of westward expansion to the Mississippi River. With the exception of Louisiana, settlements have yet to be established west of the Mississippi in the Missouri Territory (Louisiana Purchase). Alabama, Illinois, and Michigan are labeled as territories, though by 1820 both Alabama and Illinois had achieved statehood.
The geography of the West has been updated to include the discoveries of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, though most of the Pacific coast, including California, remains a complete mystery. The fine hachuring typical of Thomson's maps works to great effect illustrating the course of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevadas.
