John Speed: A Map of Virginia and Maryland

Map: tempMid

Cartographer: John Speed
Title: A Map of Virginia and Maryland
Date: 1676
Published: London
Width: 20 inches / 51 cm
Height: 15 inches / 39 cm
Map ref: USA9106
Description:
Speed's map of Virginia and Maryland is unusual in that it uses John Smith's method of orientation, that is from East to West, which was the accepted method of mapping this region during the 17th century, but it also incorporates parts of Augustine Herman's new survey of the region. This was one of the last great maps to show an East to West orientation before mapmakers such as Moll, Browne, Senex and Homann began to depict the Bay North to South. Also of note is the contemporary 17th century English description of Virginia and Maryland printed on the reverse of the map. [USA9106]
