Description:
Map printed on fabric showing Singapore, the southern part of the Malay Peninsula and part of Sumatra.

This is a military map with a "Restricted" rating showing the Malay Peninsula which was experiencing the first phase of the Malayan Emergency, the conflict between the British administration and the guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party. This map would have been designed as an aid for an airman who found himself in enemy territory and needed to escape and evade, thus their usual description of an "escape" map. For practical purposes, both sides of the fabric were used, the "reverse" side showing the northern part of hte Malay Peninsula.

Multiple sources are cited for the survey, including surveys made by the Federated Malay States, Dutch Surveys and surveys made by the General Section, General Staff. The earliest survey mentioned was made in 1930 for the area detailing Sumatra from Dutch surveys.

A scan of the reverse section of the map showing the northern Malay Peninsula is available upon request. Printed colour. SL [SEAS4990]
