Description:
City plan of Quebec, the oldest French settlement in Canada, surveyed by Joseph Bouchette, the Surveyor General of British North America.

Quebec was founded by the legendary French explorer Samuel Champlain and became the capital of the region of Quebec, the Francophone area of Canada. It was lost to the British in the Seven Years War in 1759 but its language and culture were enshrined at the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which ended that war. Bouchette had been active in mapmaking for decades before publishing this map and was one of the most important surveyors of the country in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His seminal work, "A Topographical Description of the Province of Lower Canada" is considered an essential reference for the study of the development of the region. [CAN2990]
