Important incunabula showing the region that covers the Crimea, the Sea of Azov and the northern Caucasus.

The Rome edition of Ptolemy is one of the earliest cartographic works which used copper plates for their engraving, thus ensuring a finer and more detailed finished product. This particular region features a plethora of mythical but resonant names, including the land of the Amazons, the kingdom of Mithridates, Sarmatia in Europe and Sarmatia in Asia as well as the mountains of Hyperborea, the land of the mythical "giants beyond the North Wind". The geographical information and the names are derived from Ptolemy's classical background around 150AD.
