Jansson edition of Henricus Hondius's celebrated map of European Russia based on information brought back to Amsterdam by the Dutch merchant Isaac Massa. In 1601 Massa traveled to Moscow to assist with his family's grain-trading business. During his time in Russia he witnessed the Time of Troubles, a period of civil war. He managed to escape Moscow after the fall of Boris Gudonov and eventually returned to Amsterdam with his notes and maps. Massa's map, first published by Hessel Gerritz in 1614, became the basis for virtually all 17th century European maps of Russia.
