Exceptionally rare sea chart of the Malay Peninsula, the Straits of Malacca, and Singapore. This map was drawn by Thomas Jefferys, Royal Geographer to George III, but was published after his death by the chartsellers Robert Sayer & John Bennett in The Oriental pilot, or, A select collection of charts and plans ... for the navigation of the country trade in the seas beyond the Cape of Good Hope. Sayer & Bennett's East India Pilot was comprehensive and highly influential: it remained the standard English guide to the waters of Southeast Asia for the next forty years.
The map is embellished with dozens of finely-engraved coastal profiles showing the capes, islands, and rocks that sailors might encounter while navigating these dangerous waterways. There is also a large inset map of the Road of Achen (Banda Aceh) at the northern tip of Sumatra. The island of Singapore is labeled as 'Sincapore'.
