|
Exceedingly rare sea chart of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, with a large, detailed inset of the island of Singapore itself.
This chart was first published by Norie's predecessor, William Heather, in 1803 - that map is known in only one example which is held by the British Library. J.W. Norie took over Heather's business in 1812, and in 1815 he reprinted many of Heather's maps, including this important map of the Straits of Malacca, with minor improvements and the substitution of Heather's name for his own.
A second edition of the map, of which this is an example, was published in 1831, this time with significant improvements. The shape of the island of Singapore, in particular, is vastly improved. It is almost certainly derived from the 1828 'Jackson Plan', the first geographically accurate rendition of Singapore. The town of Singapore, founded in 1819, also appears on this edition for the first time.
