Description:

| Unusual map of the Arabian Peninsula based on the shape first issued by Nicholas Sanson but here labelled with classical names. Thus, this is the Peninsula before the coming of the Prophet and before the cities of Mecca and Medina were marked. However, it does show a multitude of settlements, probably caravan stops, establishing the Peninsula as a trading hub. This is supported by the cartouche on the upper right, adorned with nine medallions which are actually representations of classical coins prevalent in the region. For example, the two lower coins with "SPQR Optimo Principii Arab Adquist" refer to two coins in use in the region at the time of the Roman Emperor Trajan while the "Rex Aretas" mentioned on the upper part was a ruler of Arabia Petraea, who issued his own coins and who had both business dealings and conflict with Pompey. Original hand colour. [MEAST4361] |
