Rare, separately-issued folding plan of Sydney published at the "Educational Depository, Pitt Street Sydney". Smith and Gardiner's rare little map is often used to illustrate the explosive growth of Sydney in the mid-nineteenth century. It originally appeared in 1854 under different authorship, Smith and Hinton, but was then re-issued a year later. It is also used to show the paucity of infrastructure in the city in comparison to its rapid civil growth. This 1855 edition shows major plans for the development of the Botanical Gardens. Records show that there were later editions which documented the changes in the settlement as it grew although the firm seems to have been quite short lived, with this being their most famous publication. As it was produced locally, it would have been the most accurate plan of its time. There are also a few small, unobtrusive manuscript annotations, marking the locations of Cleveland House, Calder House, Newstead House and Ultimo House all in the same hand. Original hand colour. Folded. [AUNZ2835] |
