Separately issued folding map of the Arabian Peninsula, issued by the Arabian American Oil Company, now Saudi Aramco. Geographically the map is based on the extraordinary surveys jointly conducted by the United States Geological Service and the Government of Saudi Arabia between 1950-8. However, there has been a substantial update in the mapping of the infrastructure of the region, with the map showing the Trans-Arabian Oil Pipeline between Dammam and Sidon in the Lebanon, the beginning stages of the paved road network as well as multiple roads in preparation, the railway link between Dammam in Riyadh, first opened in 1951 and multiple secondary roads, which seem to mirror caravan routes which go back centuries. A new addition is a large network of wadis throughout the Peninsula and on these, a series of fresh water stops in the middle of the desert. The date of this vintage map is certainly before 1971 as the modern United Arab Emirates are still called “The Trucial Coast”. The reverse of the map bears a series of photographs of the oil and surveying technology of the time, as well as several cars, which suggest the map was printed in the mid to late 1960s.
