Separately issued vintage map of the Arabian Peninsula showing an early diagram of its tectonic plate formation. Plate tectonics is a recently accepted theory that the earth's crust is composed of a series of plates which interact with each other. Where the plates meet is often an area of high geological activity such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. This map was produced as part of a joint project between the Saudi Arabian Government and the United States Geological Service. The project began in the 1950s and is responsible for the first detailed survey of the Peninsula. It was ongoing into the late 20th century and the author of this map, Glen F. Brown was the American geologist overseeing the American aspect of the project from its earliest inception.
As was always the case with these maps, it is the most accurate map of its type produced at the time. The explanatory text on the right lists the sources for the information used, the procedure of the survey, a brief description of the various areas and its results.
