Description:
|
|
Splendid map of the Arabian Peninsula divided into its three classical regions of "Arabia Foelix", "Arabia Deserta" and "Arabia Petrea". Geographically the shape of the Peninsula was based on the map by D'Anville first issued in the mid eighteenth century. Further interior detail however was far more recent and based on the extraordinary expedition performed by Carsten Niebuhr between 1761-7. This added many more names to the map, the caravan routes between Mecca and Damascus, Basra, El Catif and Cairo as well as multiple locations of wells and oases. Amongst the more prominent names present on the map are “Grain” (the old name for Kuwait), “Deraeh” (modern Diriyah, now part of Riyadh), “Catura” (Qatar) and “Mascat” (modern Muscat) Original hand colour.
