Elegant and scarce map of Edinburgh published during the late-Georgian period, an era of major expansion in the city. Planned roads and buildings are drawn in red, and areas of land proposed for future development are in yellow. Many of these developments, particularly the extensive gridded housing developments north of Carlton Hill.
The map extends north to Leith and the Firth and south to Arthur's Seat. An index of important public buildings, including theatres, religious houses, and banks, is on the left beneath the map's title. A fascinating minor detail is the inclusion of the planned Edinburgh to Dalkeith railway, a horse-operated railway used to carry coal from Dalkeith into the city. The Edinburgh terminus of the railway line can be seen on the southwest edge of Holyrood Park.
