Stunning map of Provence by one of Germany's greatest mapmakers. The title cartouche is surrounded by the armorial crests of the major towns, as well as the figures of Hercules and a Roman centurion, a reference to Marseille's ancient history as a Greek and Roman trading port.
The lower-right corner, in sombre contrast, shows the winged figure of death sweeping across the countryside, a reference to the Great Plague of Marseille in 1720 which killed over 100,000 people in Provence alone. Original hand colour. [FR3197] |
