Detailed chart of the western Magellan Straits, a notorious and difficult waterway to master. Surveyed by H. M. S. Sylvia under Captain Wharton. Wharton originally performed this survey in 1883, while also witnessing the Transit of Venus over the Straits. He became Hydrographer to the Navy and rose to the rank of Rear-Admiral. This chart ultimately replaced the survey by H. M. S. Beagle and was further revised in 1897, then updated with information provided by the Chilian Navy in 1905. This example has small corrections to 1907. SL [SAM3404] |
