Sketch map of Tibet marking the route of the Mount Everest Expedition of 1921 which was tasked with finding the best route to Everest, as well as possible routes to the summit. The map shows the expedition's attempted angles of approach before discovering the route up the Rongbuk Glacier.
The expedition managed to reach the North Col of Everest before being forced to retreat as a result of heavy gales. The reconnaisance gathered by the 1921 expedition included detailed trigonometric surveys of the mountain and information about likely routes. This knowledge was used by every subsequent expedition, including Hillary and Norgay's 1953 ascent.
