Description:
Newfoundland and the Maritime Provinces in eastern Canada.
The map is fundamentally based on Moll's "Beaver Map" or "A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on ye Continent of North America" first issued in 1715. On this small map, Moll uses his early depiction of Nova Scotia or the "hammerhead" shape. The shape would later change on the source map.
The area was deemed important enough to warrant its own map due to the recent triumph of the British in the War of the Spanish Succession, limiting French access to Newfoundland as well as celebrating newly gained English rights to the local fishing waters. Both of these aspects are detailed in the text panels on the lower right. [CAN3011] |
