Description:

Incunable bird's-eye view of the historically important city of Nicea (modern-day İznik). Published in the Nuremberg chronicle, one of the most important books published in Europe prior to 1500. The block of Gothic text above the map describes the history of the First Crusade (1096-99), as well as the history of the town of Nicea from its founding in 316 BCE to its capture by the Ottoman Empire in 1330.
The stylized bird's-eye view shows the city from the lake with its large Roman walls dominant in the foreground and the dome of a great mosque in the background.
