Very nice example of Reid's map of Maryland and Delaware, published in his "American Atlas" the second domestically produced commercial atlas in the United States.
Although it was published in 1796, the engraving date on the cartouche is 1795. The map is believed to have been inspired by the map produced by Matthew Carey in his “American Atlas” published in 1795, although it also possible that Reid used his own sources.
The map shows an early delineation of the counties of the state, the road network and most importantly of all, the newly nascent city of Washington, next to the older settlement of Georgetown.
This is the first state of the map with the imprint of Wayland, Reid and Smith on the lower margin. |
