Reid's map of Georgia is newly engraved for his American Atlas, the second atlas domestically printed in the United States. This makes it one of the earliest available maps of the new state.
Territorially, this map is based on Bowen’s map first issued in Harris’s Voyages in 1744, stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi, containing the modern states of Mississippi, Alabama and parts of Florida and Louisiana. During this period, the main non American Indian settlements are congregated west of the Savannah River. Further west, the focus of the nomenclature deals with the local Indian tribes and settlements.
This is the first edition, first state of this map, identified by the imprint of Reid, Wayland and Smith on the lower margin. Although it is derived from Matthew Carey’s map of Georgia issued in 1795, this is a new engraving. [USA9197] |
